After the destruction of the centuries old Gros Islet market by Hurricane Lenny in 1999, the produce vendors of the town were forced to vend their produce at the town’s bus stand and along numerous street corners. These locations provided little or no protection from the elements to both the vendors and their produce, and resulted in a scattered nature to the activities which was generally inconvenient to the customers and not conducive to business. A new market facility was thus required to house the vending in a single, conducive, sanitary and welcoming environment.
Designed in a traditional French colonial style facade, the new facility covers a footprint of near 3,000ft²
and rises two and half storeys. It accommodates, on it ground floor level, a craft market of 16 vendors stalls and 2 concessionary huts, and further incorporates multiple functions on the upper floors. These added functions include administrative and commercial offices on the first floor and a partially open roof deck for hosting of private or public ceremonies and functions.
Dannion provided complete consultancy including – engineering and architectural designs up to planning approval, cost estimating and management, drafting of tender documents (inclusive of technical specifications and conditions of contract), the prequalification of contractors, tender evaluation of the received tenders for construction of the facility and recommendation for award of contract, and provided construction supervision and project management during the construction phase.
Maintaining our responsible approach and commitment to a sustainable future, the design of the facility incorporated a hybrid rainwater harvesting system with elevated storage tanks that allowed the supply of water to the building under gravity.
