The Francis Compton Building, owned by the National Insurance Corporation, is a seven-storey building overlooking the Castries Harbour. It currently houses numerous major organisations including the National Housing Corporation, the British High Commission, UNESCO, the Ministry of Education and the Offices of the Attorney General of St Lucia. The assignment required that a structural assessment be done to determine the adequacy of the building, and in particular the roof floor to accommodate the loading due to the likely presence of two cooling towers (the old one and its replacement) on the roof during the transition point between the two systems.
Dannion, through a complete structural assessment of the building from the roof slab down to the foundation, was required to advise on the appropriate location for the installation of the new tower and provide structural engineering designs and drawings for the likely structural system to allow the accommodation of the new tower.
